On Sunday morning at approximately 2 AM, a homeowner in Chesnee, Spartanburg County, South Carolina shot and killed a 19-year-old man who had entered their home, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to a reported shooting on Cherokee Circle and found the intruder dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Two residents were present at the scene. No charges have been filed against the homeowner.
South Carolina operates under Castle Doctrine law, which allows homeowners to use deadly force — without a duty to retreat — when they reasonably believe an intruder poses an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm. The no-charges decision by investigators suggests the shooting met that legal threshold. South Carolina also passed permitless carry legislation signed by Governor Henry McMaster in March.
The timing matters because at 2 AM is when most people are asleep, disoriented, and at their most vulnerable.
